If you you’ve ever traveled in Northern Minnesota, just north of Two Harbors, and found yourself hungry, you might have stopped in at Betty’s Pies. Betty sold her business in 1984. The New Betty’s Pies opened in 2000.

Betty and her pies are a legend. It is amazing the number of people I’ve talked to about her cookbook that proudly informed me that they have partaken in the “real” mouth-watering Betty’s pies.

I’m not a pie maker so I asked a relative to pick three recipes and make them. The result? Superb! Mouthwatering! Frankly, eating Betty’s pies brought me back to my youth and those times I pulled up a chair at my grandmothers on baking day and had a slice or two of her delicious pies with a glass of milk. And who doesn’t want to remember the “good ‘ole days?”

Along with the scrumptious recipes, the reader will get a taste of who Betty is as she provides a bit of her history. I also enjoyed the little tips and bits of information on the pages of the cookbook. They made the reading enjoyable.

Now for my favorites (I haven’t included any cookie, bar, bread, quick bread or pie crust recipes): The Apple-Blueberry Pie brought back memories of my grandmother’s pies and found me sneaking a second and third piece! The Bumble Berry Pie contains all my favorite fruits; blueberries, blackberries, strawberries and raspberries and makes my mouth water just thinking about it. The Chocolate Layer Pie (also called Five Layer Chocolate) is the answer to any chocoholic’s dream.

It is difficult to pick favorites because all of Betty’s pies are winners. From the Chocolate Peanut Pie, or the Hershey Bar Pie, or the Lemon Angel Pie to the great recipes for cookies, bars, breads and quick breads, the cooks who are lucky enough to have this cookbook will be thrilled with the results of their efforts. Those that are fortunate enough to eat these fabulous treats; they will think they are in heaven.
