A year after Highland Studios is burnt down, leaving behind the charred remains of an unknown man, Jonah Britt has it up and running again and is seeking publicity. Mick Sever, a renowned journalist, comes to the Bahamas to write a piece about Jonah’s music recording studio. Once he arrives there, however, he finds that everything is not as it should be. Someone or something is breaking into the studio and destroying things. Still trying to solve the mystery of how the studio burnt the first time, they now have to figure out what’s going on, and hopefully before anyone else dies.
I really enjoyed this book once I was able to get into it. The beginning is a bit confusing with all of the different characters and trying to remember who is who. The actual mystery behind the story was masterfully plotted, however and made this the good read that it was.
Bruns has a way of bringing the Bahamas to life, which was another great bonus for me. He really makes you take a second to think about whether or not you want to fly off to Margaritaville though. Bruns shows not only the highly publicized side of the Bahamas, but the easily forgotten parts as well.
This book is the fifth in the Caribbean series by Don Bruns. Though the book easily stands alone and you don’t need any history to understand it, I didn’t have any vested interest in any of the characters because I didn’t read any others in the series. I didn’t feel like I knew any of them and so I had a really hard time caring what they were up to.
Though the book is great, I’d strongly suggest reading his earlier ones to understand and care more about the characters.
