The Aunt Dimity series has delighted its readers for years. The newest book in the cozy mystery series, Aunt Dimity Slays the Dragon does not let the reader down.
Humor invades the everyday events of life in the community of Finch. This small town in England has its fair share of quirky residents, including American Lori Shepard who inherited her home from Aunt Dimity and still communicates with the dead woman. Lori has lived in Finch for eight years. She has married and has twin sons. Lori’s life and that of her neighbors begins to feel routine. Lori wishes for nothing more than something out of the ordinary rather than all the numerous traditional summer festivals that abound in Finch and are in the process of being planned.
All is turned upside down when Calvin Malvern, the nephew of Lori’s farming neighbor, disrupts the town meeting and announces he is bringing an American-style Renaissance Festival to town.
Two months later the weekend festival opens on Horace Malvern’s land and numerous residents of Finch become involved with the fair in different aspects. Even Lori’s two sons ride their horses in the pageantry of the fair. Lori becomes concerned as attempts appear to be made on the life of King Wilfred (Calvin Malvern). After Lori’s last adventure, she isn’t sure anyone will take her seriously–not Aunt Dimity, and certainly not her husband, Bill.
Everyone likes Calvin, or so they claim. Will Lori be able to solve the mystery before something happens to Calvin and possibly to others attending or working at the fair? And will the community of Finch be able to withstand the onslaught of outsiders? What will happen to all those dull and repetitive traditional summer events in Finch now that a glamorous and make-believe life can be obtained at the Renaissance Festival?
