Brianna “Bree” Winston- Beaufort inherits her father’s law firm. The law firm is haunted and located in the graveyard. Bree represents the dead people who want to appeal to a higher court, and her helpers are angels. The story takes place in Savannah, Georgia.
Bree is back in this book and short on money because, low and behold, the dead do not pay her for her services. One of her relatives talk her into representing a teenage Lindsey Chandler who stole money from a Girl Scout. Bree is used to dealing with the dead but decides to try her best with Lindsey to make some money.
As it turns out Bree has her hands full. Lindsey is rebellious, with no remorse for others or her actions. Then there is the possibilty that Lindsey might have tried to run down the Girl Scout with her Hummer. Just as the case gets going, Bree is contacted by Lindsey’s dead father, millionaire Probert Chandler. He needs Bree to prove that his death was no accident like everyone believes. Now Bree is helping father and daughter and uncovering facts to the case. Along the way she finds out that money can buy off almost anyone and that greed can get you killed or make you kill others.
This is book two in the Beaufort & Company Mystery series. Book one was called Defending Angels and book three, Winged Justice is in the making.
The author has also written two other series under the name Claudia Bishop. The series were Hemlock Falls and the Dr. McKenzie series. I did not read book one and I think that is why it was hard for me to pick up on this book. It took me a while to understand that Bree’s help is from angels and that she saw glimpses of dead people who give her messages. My suggestion would be to read book one first.
Armchair Interviews agrees: Books in series are always better enjoyed if you start with #1.
