Twenty-six-year-old Merriam Stoltzfus is considered to be en alt maedel in her Old Order Amish Community, and many find her cold-hearted. Though she doesn't consider herself as cross as those around her do, she knows that the trust and love she gave to one man who betrayed her has possibly left her without the capacity to love again.
Regardless, Merriam does find herself the object of attention of two very different suitors. One is a respected widower in her community who Merriam believes only wants her as a mother and housekeeper. The other is a less respectable newspaper reporter outside her faith--who makes her laugh again.
In this expanded and re-released version, the Brides of Lancaster County series takes an inside view of the tranquil Amish life. Unfortunately even in this tranquil setting, life isn't always easy. The crises of faith are just as real, the pain of loss is just as great, and the hope of renewal can be just as fleeting.
Though not everything comes together in perfect order, it does come together realistically. It provides an interesting perspective of the Amish in modern times as they struggle to live by the old ways so close to the rest of society, not all of whom respect their traditions.
Armchair Interviews says: A Merry Heart is a sweet story of love and faith restored.
