Labor Day weekend began as the Amish young people headed toward Hershey. The trip would mark the last time Wayne and Loraine would spend a weekend with their single friends before they married. In a matter of seconds, everything changed. The van crashed, lives were lost, and those who lived, suffered physical and emotional injuries.
Back home in the tight-knit Amish community families mourned the loss of loved ones, while others tried to put their lives back together. Loraine suffered few injuries in the crash, and her trials awaited her. Two dear cousins and friends to Loraine left town to heal from their physical and emotional injuries. Wayne lost a leg in the crash and called off the wedding. Wayne felt he could not support Loraine with his injury. Loraine discovers neither her mother nor Wayne’s mother supported the choice of their children’s future spouse. Wayne’s former girlfriend, and the one his mother wanted him to wed, has come back to town. To complicate matters even further, Loraine’s former boyfriend arrives back home and Wayne thinks Jake and Loraine should marry.
Loraine is torn between the pledge she made to Wayne and old feelings resurfacing for her former boyfriend, Jake. As Wayne continues to push Loraine toward Jake, she doesn’t know how much longer she can hold out against Jake’s charm. The mothers are happy their children have come to their senses.
More tragedy awaits the Amish community. Will it bring those who love closer or tear them further apart? And who will it bring closer? Will misconceptions be righted or continue on to cloud judgment?
With strong faith Loraine moves forward. She acts out her beliefs to the disbelief of those around her. Will happiness be hers once again? Can she grasp and hold onto love which once was hers?
A Cousin’s Promise is book 1 in the Indiana Cousins series. What does the future hold for the other cousins? Readers will look forward to finding out in the continuing series.
Armchair Interviews says: An excellent rendering of life taken out of our control and the dynamic results not only for individuals, but for a whole community.
