30 Ways in 30 Days to Save Your Family provides easy and practical advice for families to fight the onslaught of the toxic culture that is attacking our children’s well being. And while it’s great to have a book to help parents protect their children from the “culture,” it’s even better to know you’re not alone in the fear of the popular culture.

It’s tough to raise happy, well-adjusted and emotionally healthy children with good values when it seems that everywhere we turn, there are values that are immoral and unhealthy and even dangerous for our children. Hagelin provides a guide for parents who want a specific plan with specific goals to counteract the culture.

Hagelin covers a myriad of issues. She informs the reader how the marketers target the children to purchase their products; how to effectively fight the culture (not the child); where the dangers are for our children and how to avoid them, etc. But she also challenges parents to really think about and plan the world they want for their kids, how to talk with children about issues and how parents can make their home fun and inviting. It all boils down to values and the differences between the family’s principles and the preferences.

While the entire book has value, I found the messages about being a parent, not a friend, to be valuable and timely. Hagelin promotes following the “gut” instincts of parents (couldn’t we all have avoided “bad” things if we’d only followed our intuition?). She also tells us to seek allies, and how to fight the popular culture of movies, electronic games, etc. It’s a road map that parents can use to help guide their family through the mind field of the culture.

Children’s happiness and well-being are at stake.
