Armchair Interviews is how two friends who love to read and interview authors came together to connect authors to readers. We review books and some one-on-one author interviews that we post on our Web site.
WITH PRIDE:
Named one of Writer's Digest 101 Best Web Sites for Writers
On January 25, 2005 we launched our Web site. January 2006 we read in Writer's Digest we were selected as one of the 101 Best Web Sites for Writers.
The newest Writer's Digest just showed we received the honor again. We are so proud!
Happy Anniversary to Us
Our wonderful Web site was launched two years ago January--thanks to Paul Larson of Creative Arc, http:www.CreativeArc.com, our ever-patient and all- knowing web master; Alan Pranke, http://www.AMP13.com, who designed our branding circle logo that so many love; and Mike Bollinger of http://www.LightscapeStudios.com, who took the perfect photo of the our singature armchair, book and glasses.
What a whirlwind two years this has been. Andrea and Connie are also thankful for the:
-- Support of readers and reviewers worldwide.
-- Respect we've gained from publicists and publishers.
-- Honors from Writer's Digest.
-- Growth in ezine subscribers.
-- Thousands of people who looked at our Web site last year.
-- Support of authors or publishers who bought ads or audio interviews
-- Interesting articles submitted by all kinds of people.
-- New friends we have worldwide
-- New authors we have been able to introduce to the world.
-- And so much more!

To shorten winter,
borrow some money due in spring.
-- W.J. Vogel
Exciting Changes Coming to Armchair Interviews
Jeff Foster, also one of our valued reviewers, has been working hard to advance Armchair Interviews. He is making all media contacts and arranging for audio interviews, email interviews and ads. You'll be hearing from him. Andrea and Connie are thrilled with Jeff's marketing acumen--and know his involvement will take us to "the next level." Check Jeff (and his smiling face) out at http://www.ArmchairInterviews.com/bios
These changes are in works to make our Web content of more value to you as a reader and as a writer--more interviews, more Q&A with well-known writers, more insights that can help you be a better writer or learn about new authors.
We should be ready to "tell all" in the next ezine end of February. We're excited...and hope you will be, too!
New Genre Added
The new genre added is PARENTING--those books didn't seem to fit anyplace else, so we added that genre.
Surprise, surprise. It's New Year's Resolution time, and we have been getting so many diet books lately, but they go into self-help (some might be in non-fiction or health).
Books allow you to enjoy the intense pleasure
of the company of some great author long after they are gone....
Linking to Author's Web Sites
As of January 2007, IF available, in every book review, we link to the author's Web site--and would like them to link to ours! And we have been surprised how many authors do NOT have their own Web sites.
"Second Anniversary" Contest Closed
The deadline for this contest is January 31. We are so excited to read all the wonderful entries. We wish you all good luck in winning our first-ever cash prize. To those who entered, thank you!
Unraveling the Mysteries of Handwriting
By Sheila Lowe, author of POISON PEN (see our review)
http://www.claudiaroseseries.com http://www.sheilalowe.com
If you're reading this article you're probably a mystery lover, as I have been since starting with Enid Blyton's THE FAMOUS FIVE when I was seven. Later, my high school bud, Jo Levetsky, who read a book a day (hidden behind a textbook, I suspect), would pass them along to me. It was gothic mysteries back then--Victoria Holt, Mary Stewart, Madeleine Brent and the rest. No doubt it was that same love of mystery that piqued my interest in handwriting analysis when my boyfriend's mother shocked me by deconstructing my personality after reading a book on it.

Advertise Your Book, Classes, Products
in Our Ezine and Web Site
A BIG THANK YOU to those who have placed ads:
JIM HART OF BETHANY HOUSE PUBLISHERS scheduled four ads that started in November, ending in January. Thanks.
--DIANA BOOHER is running writing workshop ad again--to give you plenty of time to plan ahead for this April training (see her article below).
-- PETER RENNEBOHM's ad will run for months on the Web. See his site for free books-- http://www.PRennebohm.com
WHO SHOULD ADVERTISE?
Authors, workshops/seminars/classes,
writer's products, etc., etc. etc. If your market is readers or writers, they will know about you.
So if you wish to place an ad in the ezine or the web, write minimal copy and feature your book cover. Connie will design the ad for the one-time $50 fee. The cost of the ad itself is $75 for a month on the web or one ezine.
The ezine ads will always be at the end of the ezine. The web ads will be on the book review main page and all ads rotate, so to see them all, "refresh/reload" the page.
Fee is $75 paid in advance by check (only) to CASI Publishing, LLC (that's Armchair Interviews' mother ship) or to our new PayPal account. Ezine deadline is 25th of each month.
Web ad are posted when received. Fee is $75 paid in advance, same as above, for 30 days posting.
GET NOTICED...advertise in our ezine and reach our very niche market that might be ideal for your product or service.

What Are Our Reviewers Reading?
Rowena Brew, Ireland
As an avid reader, I love opening a new book. It's like embarking on a new adventure each and every time.
THE BOOK OF LOST THINGS: I have just finished re-reading John Connolly's amazing book. John is one of my favorite writers in the crime/thriller genre, and his books always have a touch of the supernatural to them also. In this book, he moves away from his usual type of novel to give us what could be best described as a fairy tale for adults.
When David's mother dies when he is 12, he is faced with the reality of his father getting remarried--and having another child. In an effort to escape this reality, David becomes entwined in a world where the characters from well-known fairytales live, and must conquer this world if he is to return to his own world. This book is captivating in its simplicity, and has the reader hoping that the young hero of the story will do what is right and ultimately accept his reality.
HANNIBAL RISING: This story by Thomas Harris is about what turned a child into one of the most notorious fictional serial killers of all time, Hannibal Lecter. From his happy early childhood where the promise of his genius mind was beginning to appear, through the harrowing tale of the plunder of his parents' home during WW2, and the subsequent hardship which the young Hannibal endured, we experience the birth of a cold ruthless killer. As usual, Harris provides a facinating look into the psyche of the serial killer.
TOO MUCH TOO YOUNG This is the autobiography of Kerry Katona, the ex-wife of Bryan McFadden of Westlife fame. In this heartfelt and honest insight into Kerry's life to date, the reader comes to understand why a young girl of 25 can have lived through such an emotional rollercoaster for her whole life. From a young age, Kerry was subjected to her mother's drinking and drug use, exposing her to the sordid world of drug abuse. Having spent time back and forth between foster homes, Kerry never succeeded in having the sense of security and belonging, which can sometimes be taken for granted in childhood. Now, divorced at 25, with two young children and a third on the way and engaged to be married, one can only hope that the future for Kerry will be brighter than her past.

THE AURA OF LOVE (4 stars): Enchanting and amazing, that is what I think of Kathy J. Marsh's The Aura of Love. The sexy and romantic characters of Remy Renee, the story's heroine and the handsome writer Jace Williams, the story's hero left me waiting to see what they would do next! The story takes place east of the Caribbean in what is called "The Island." Its inhabitants are African American. Yet, among them is a secret society called the Auralites that make up the blue and purple people. As Remy one of the purple beings and Jace is amongst the blue ones, their love seems doomed from the start. Kathy Marsh took me on a journey I will never forget. I eagerly turned each page. Not only is this story of a gallant love affair. It also sheds light on how foolish is the common act of "prejudice" and the pain and poison it causes. Yet, the joy is discovering whether these coven-crossed lovers survive. I will say this. I certainly wasn't disappointed!
GOD DON'T PLAY (4 stars): This story is as complex as it is entertaining. Author Mary Monroe introduces Annette who is seemingly unattractive but is blessed with a loyal and handsome hubby. While her best friend Rhoda is beautiful, her spouse spends hardly any time with her. Even Rhoda's daughter Jada often wonders how her Mom could be friends with such a "big person." Yet, Annette is one of those women who loves friends and family with a passion; a person who you either love her or hate her with no middle ground. A number of people become suspect when she begins to receive threatening calls and deliveries. Yet, the plot is like that of a person looking for her glasses and they are right in front of her the entire time. All of these women have much drama surrounding them and you never know what they are all going to do next. Yet, each of them find out in her own way that GOD DON'T PLAY.
CREATING A HEALING SOCIETY (5 stars): Dr. Susan Lawrence's book is not only profound but has the capabilities of changing our views on trauma and how it impacts all of us daily. It was the best book I have read in the entire year of 2006 and I have read many. Susan takes here readers through a journey of understanding how trauma, particularly as a child, can change us and chart the course of our lives. We learn about how Aids is affecting us as a people and also how other diseases affect society as a whole. Her book touches on loss of lives and how people can affect us long after they have passed away. But, most importantly, what can happen to society if we recognize how as adults we traumatize children in a way that we honestly never realize. This is the one book that I wish could be bottled and given away like water to every single person who even considers parenting a child. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to heal or to be healed.
MOTHER FERAL'S LOVE (5 stars) Touching and remarkable is Lawrence Barker's exciting new Sci-Fi special MOTHER FERAL'S LOVE! This action-packed love story takes place in the city of Vrantum, filled with ancient stone towers and black brick streets. Haunting this place is the Feral named Evrandal. Now just her name alone can cause certain unrest: It either means, "flower in the wasteland" or "disgusting creature that spreads parasites." Here is a soul that hardly anyone wants to meet let alone sympathize with. Yet, sympathy is what she deserves. It was just hair raising traveling with this feral as she battled any and all who stood in the way of her quest to save her child. She only has four days to accomplish this feat and I found myself cheering her all the way. Everyone must read this book to reinforce what is an age-old belief: There is nothing in this world or any like a mother's love!

Poet Nadia Brown Speaks About Writing Poetry
Interview conducted by reviewer Ernest Dempsey--see our review
Thank you Nadia for your time and the wisdom you shared.
'I don't put myself above the reader,' says Nadia Brown, author of the recent poetry book Unscrambled Eggs. Though not a voluminous work, UNSCRAMBLED EGGS is sharply focused and exhibits an inspiring degree of freedom both in form of the verse and the purpose of the work. Nadia Brown kindly took time to share her thoughts about poetry with reference to her book.

Question of the Day for Mystery Writers/Readers
When I edit reviews for mysteries or suspense thrillers, often a reviewer will write, "They found a body of a dead girl."
Now my question is: Are all found "bodies" presumed to be dead--or would we otherwise would just say, "found a dead girl."
I know sometimes we say a lot of bodies filled the room, or there were a lot of bodies at the party (and we presume here they are alive).
Just had a moment for my mind to wonder as I was editing a mystery review--so let me hear from you--dead or alive--all body opinions will count.

No Strings, Just Free Books
By M.J. Rose, Co-Founder of Great American Book Giveaway
You have nothing to lose--and books to gain. When I tell readers about The Great American Book Giveaway, they are:
1) Delighted. This is a chance to win free books. Sneak peeks at new novels and non-fiction titles 2-8 weeks before they hit the shelves in the store. A chance to discover a new author you've never heard of before, or try an author you've always wanted to try.
2) Suspicious. How come you're giving away free books? What am I signing up for here? There must be a catch.
This is pretty straightforward. More books are released every day than there are media outlets, reviews, reporters, and booksellers to announce them, let readers know about them, and make a fuss over them. Over 1500 new books are published every week--not counting self-published titles. That's more than 200 a day!!! And publishers need new ways to get the word out about those books. So we've come up with a new way of spreading the word about those books. Giving them away before they hit the shelves. We invite publishers to give us a few dozen copies of advance titles they want to get readers reading early so they can spread the word about the books.
And we invite readers over to our site to win a free book. We have four new titles a week. And you can enter every week. No strings, just free books--because nothing sells a book like word of mouth and an author or a publisher can't get word of mouth unless someone--or lots of someone's read the book. You've got nothing to lose, sign up at www.bkgiveaway.com and take a chance on a new book.

Published Author of Children's Books Comments
By Katie McKy
(Katie McKy lives in Eau Claire, Wisconsin and is the author of PUMPKIN TOWN (see our review) and IT ALL BEGAIN WITH A BEAN)
The wanna-be children's book writer across the table twitched. I had just told her that Houghton Mifflin had just released my second picture book and that I recently signed a contract for my third young adult novel. The wanna-be had done everything that aspiring writers are told to do: she had joined SCWBI and a regional children's writers association. She attended conferences, where she met editors. She took classes.

An Editor's Lament
Friend Beth saw this paragraph as part of a technical article about web sites--and said "Thought of you, Connie." She knows how I hate to read something that should have been edited better--or at least proofread by someone other than the author. I had told her about a book that I just read that was a really good story, but I was disappointed with the inconsistencies in capitalization, punctuation, and watching for redundancy. This is what she sent me:
"Uh oh. Didn't we fire most of the editors a few years ago? Time to ride through all the brew pubs and Starbucks in the land shouting, "Come back. We need you! You matter again!"
It is our understanding that most big publishing houses do not spend as much time and money on having YOUR work edited--if it is needed, so it is important that authors make sure they have crossed their t's and dotted their i's--all with the help of a good editor.
Here's the full article: This was how they realized they needed editors to review the web content! What a novel idea!

I entered a contest (called fast and frigid--the idea was to write a short story within a certain period of time with the cold as the catalyst. We had to then submit it, get notified and have five days to revise/edit and resubmit and then get published). I won and "Tulip Kiss" is now published on http://www.echelonpress.com You can see the announcement now and the story will be published in ebook form.

REVIEWER: Cheryl Hiltibran
What an insightful and touching review Cheryl Hiltibran wrote for my book, SEVEN BRIDGES. I kept asking myself, "Is she talking about me"--which shows how introspective it is to read another's view of our own writing. It also should encourage the new writer or poet to realize that when we are putting down our feelings and deep observations we sometimes write things we don't even know we know. I always get that feeling when I receive feedback from one of my books or articles--makes me look at myself more closely.
I am delighted to have found your lovely and informative Website through Cheryl. Thank you.

Upcoming Event
4th Annual Writer's Conference and Book Fair
Bloomington (Minnesota) Art Center's Literary Council is sponsoring its 4th annual Writer's Conference and Book Fair on Saturday, March 24, 2007 from 9:30-3:30.
Authors can apply for free table space where they can sell their books and visit with interested visitors. They can also read from their book for 10minutes, to be later televised on Bloomington cable. Workshops (must preregister) in the morning are for people wanting to learn more about writing memoirs, what publishers are looking for, what an editor does, how to write to children, and how to market your book and yourself.
For more information, contact Kate Pettit at 952-835-5227 or lpettit@gowebway.com or www.BloomingtonArtCenter.com
