Armchair Interviews is how two friends who love to read and interview authors came together to connect authors to readers. We review books and some one-on-one author interviews that we post on our Web site.

2006 and 2007--WITH PRIDE: Named one of Writer's Digest 101 Best Web Sites for Writers

On January 25, 2005 we launched our Web site. In 2006 and now again in 2007, we've been honored by Writer's Digest selecting us as one of the "101 Best Web Sites for Writers."

We are so thrilled!

An average month is about 100 book reviews posted on our web site. We also post them on Amazon at the publication date.

So what happened in March? WELL, 197 BOOK REVIEWS were sent to us from our 90 reviewers, coming from all over the world.

That's 197 authors whose books we've helped promote--some first timers, others award-winning authors, but they all received the same kind of attention to detail by our reviewers.

LINKS MAKE EVERYONE MORE VISIBLE:
If EVERY ONE of those 197 authors linked to our Web site,
all we can say is WOW! so please do.

Again we say: How wonderful that our reviewer get so many 4- and 5-star quality books. It's a good sign for the future of books.

"It is impossible to enjoy idling thoroughly
unless one has plenty of work to do."

Listeners Appreciate Audio Interviews to Learn About Books and the Author

(Unsolicited Comment about Audio Interview with Laurel Dewey, author of the thriller, PROTECTOR)

I just found your website and have bookmarked it. Love the chance to meet new authors, many of whom I've not heard of before and who sound very intriguing. Enjoyed the audio interview of Laurel Dewey very much. She sounds very down-to-earth and fascinating all at the same time. Was interested in her attention to detail in relationship to research for her novel. I don't think many writers spend quite as much time as she did. (Maybe they should!) Will order her book on Amazon. I checked out her website and was quite impressed as well.

A Sweet Story about Connecting Through the Internet

One day we received an email at Armchair Interviews from Jeanette B. about an excellent author we had just interviewed.

"I read Paul Robertson's THE HEIR yesterday, front to back in one sitting. Please tell him to write a follow-up book with the continuing story of Jason and Eric. This book is really, really good for a first book. May this writer have a long and prosperous career as an author."

So we wrote: Did you read our review? Did you listen to the interview?

She writes back: "Prior to reading this book, I had never heard of Bethany House (published THE HEIR). I read a lot, from the library, which I visit at least once or twice a week. I was simply browsing the new mystery section when this book title and cover caught my eye. When I finished reading it, I emailed Bethany House to comment. I do appreciate your enthusiasm to my email, too.

So we write: Then why did you write us?

She replies: "I'm new to this computer stuff, so here goes. When I finished reading THE HEIR, I looked inside back cover of book and saw: www.bethanyhouse,com. I searched on my computer and up came Authors In The Media, with a subtitle of Paul Robertson (THE HEIR)@ArmchairInterviews.com. I clicked Info@ArmchairInterviews and wrote. Soon after that I received a short response from you.

The Thread...

What's important here for authors is the "thread" of how people find out about books, authors and Armchair Interviews. I really wanted Jeanette to tell me she listened to the interview or read the review...but she didn't--and in her search to connect with someone who could tell the author how much she loved his book, we were part of that thread. We were happy to forward her wonderful note to Paul Robertson.

"Nothing links man to man like the frequent passage
from hand to hand of a good book."

How Do You Create a Timeline for PR?

by Maryglenn McCombs

To create a plan for book promotion, you will need to start with setting a publication date. Understandably, there is a great deal of confusion about what a publication date--or pub date--really is.

A pub date is an "official release"--usually at least six weeks after a book comes off press. In some ways, this is a phantom date, as it is an approximate date when books will be available in stores. A pub date is an important part of planning a PR campaign for your books, as it facilitates coordinating media placements and in-store availability. The pub date functions as a means of tying the book promotion and distribution together.

Read the rest of Maryglenn's article on The Author's Place on our web site. http://www.ArmchairInterviews.com/authors-place

Only four words in the English language end in "dous":
tremendous, horrendous, stupendous, and hazardous.
(You're not doubting this, are you?)

Only two words in the English language
have all five vowels in order:
"abstemious" and "facetious."
(Yes, admit it, you are going to say: a-e-i-o-u.)

FAQ for Authors on Our Web Site

In the updated FAQ section of our Web site, we publish our simple and easy-to-follow guidelines for publicists, publishers and authors to directly request a book review. Because we have added many new publishers, the number of requests keeps increasing. It is important any author follow the guidelines carefully to increase their chance of being reviewed.

The "Horror" genre has been added to our long list. Some earlier books were posted in mystery or thriller/suspense--but where Horror. The newest horror book is posted as an audiobook genre, but check it out.

Introducing More Reviewers

Maria Elmvang, Denmark

I'm really excited to get to review for you! When I first heard of this, I had not dared hope that it'd be open for international reviewers, let alone that you'd (Andrea) be part Danish!

I'm 27 and live in Copenhagen, Denmark together with my husband of three years. I work as an IT-consultant, but my true passion is reading. I taught myself how to read at an early age, and haven't stopped since. I recently discovered that writing reviews of books, and sharing them with others, is almost as satisfying as reading the books themselves. In my spare time I'm a member of a choir, a Bible study, a literature club and a theater society--whatever time is left after that is spent together with friends and family. I love reading and use it to relax and rewind.

See Interesting links/blogs below for her blog.

Laura Hilton, Arkansas

Laura Hilton lives in Arkansas with her husband, Steve, and their five children. Laura has over a thousand book reviews published--on Armchair Reviews as well as other review sites--and has two fiction books, Shadows of the Past and Hot Chocolatez published with Treble Heart Books.

Laura reviews in numerous genres: Christian Fiction/Inspirational, Contemporary Romance, Romantic Suspense, Historical, Children, Middle Reader/Young Adult, Non-Fiction, Literary Fiction and some Chick Lit. Check out her web site: http://www.laurahilton.com

Audio Interviews and the Shy Writer

By Mayra Calvani

Audio interviews are in rising popularity as a tool of book promotion among authors. After all, all you need are a phone, a witty personality, and a talent for public speaking. The first one is easy--everybody has a phone these days. The second is a gift you may be born with if you're lucky. The third is a skill that can be learned, improved and perfected with the right tools.

What Are Our Reviewers Reading?

Muhammed Hassanali, Ohio

BLOOD AND THUNDER by Hampton Sides. While BLOOD AND THUNDER's main focus is the historical Kit Carson and the American campaign against the Navajo, it also portrays the Mexican War and its aftermath, United States westward expansion to the Pacific Ocean, President Polk's military action under Manifest Destiny, and the coming of the Civil War to the Southwest. The tale is of many heroes and villains, with some characters playing both roles. It is an epic story across an equally vast landscape that bequeaths the majestic history of the Old West and transports the reader to another time and place.

VOICES OF ISLAMD IN SOUTHEAST ASIA, edited by Greg Fealy and Virginia Hooker. Southeast Asia has more than 200 million Muslims, who speak a number of different languages, have diverse cultures and practice a mosaic of Islamic interpretations. This book through translated contemporary texts represents the complex Muslim attitudes to a wide audience. The material is arranged in six broad themes: personal expressions of faith; Islamic law; state and governance; women and family; jihad; and interactions with non-Muslims and the wider Muslim world. A country-by-country sketch and commentary before each extract help put the readings in perspective.

MEDICINE BY DESIGN by Fen Montaigne. I initially got Medicine by Design because I though it was going to be about designing medication around a patient's DNA. Instead, Medicine by Design is all about biomedical advances. Pleasantly, the focus is not on the technology, but on the beneficiaries and the men and women who make these medical miracles possible. Montaigne covers biomedical devices, advanced technologies (e.g., deep brain simulation, advances in surgery, etc), medical imaging, biomedical companies, and biomedical education. The focus on people, rather than technology, makes it easier to relate to and be awed by biomedical advances.

Lisa Frisbie, California

Lisa Frisbie is co-executive director of The Center for Marriage & Family Studies,Del Mar, California. Together with husband David she is the co-author of numerous articles and eight books, including "RAISING GREAT KIDS ON YOUR OWN," "MOVING FORWARD AFTER DIVORCE," and "HAPPILY REMARRIED." (We are fortunate to have both Lisa and David review for us.)

DECEPTION by Randy Alcorn. This is a well-written murder mystery, with enough tension and plot twists to keep you turning the pages, yet with enough comic relief that the reader can get to sleep at night, without having to leave all the lights on! I've laughed out loud many times in these chapters.

THE MESSAGE by Eugene Peterson. It's the Lenten Season, a great time to read through the Scripture, especially in this easy-to-understand translation by author Eugene Peterson. Peterson was just here in San Diego; David and I had the opportunity to hear him speak and attend a book-signing. I am reading the stories of Jesus' last days on earth, his death and his resurrection, as the season transitions toward Holy Week and Easter Sunday.

MAKING A MARRIAGE, edited by Larry Morris. This 2007 release is written by Christian family counselors and educators, looking at ways to strengthen your marriage from a Biblical point of view. The books' seven chapters emphasize commitment, communication, managing conflict, and building spiritual intimacy, among other issues. A great gift for newlyweds, and a "tune-up" for existing marriages, to help keep them on track.

When the famous George Bernard Shaw was interviewed near the end of his life,
he was asked who would he have been if he could have been someone else,
and he answered, "I would be the man George Bernard Shaw could have been, but never was."

Researching to Write a Murder Mystery

Jo Hiestand has written numerous mysteries set in England. SAINTED MURDER*, 12TH NIGHT OF CHRISTMAS*, PEARS BEFORE SWINE, DEATH OF AN ORDINARY GUY, and HORNS OF A DILEMMA (April 2007), all published by Hilliard & Harris. This story is about how she does the most-important research to give authenticity and accuracy mystery readers expect. (*See our reviews)

A Slippery Business by Jo Hiestand

Golden Age mystery author Ngaio Marsh researched the murder method for her book Scales of Justice in her front garden, stabbing a variety of large melons with a shooting stick to observe the "head wounds" created by the stick's pointed tip.

Perhaps my method of death wasn't as exotic, but my murder setting needed a bit of research. And, not being a burglar or home handyperson, I didn't possess the necessary weapon. So I trotted over to my unsuspecting hardware store to purchase the tool for my trade. (Do I get tax credit for this?)

"We Love Your Story But We're Going to Have to Pass..."

Welcome to the Rocky Road of Publishing, by Laurel Dewey, author of PROTECTOR

(see our review/listen to audio interview)

A hundred years ago, a writer just had to write a good story. There was no hype, bestseller list, no five-star ratings, no book tours, no second-guessing by agents or publishers, no white-knuckled, migraine-inducing, inflated expectations of the "next offering." There was just the book and the populace either loved it or hated it.

Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence.
Talent will not; nothing is more common that unsuccessful men with talent.
Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb.
Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts.
Persistence and determination are omnipotent.

By Mayra Calvani

Starting your own book club is a great way to share your love of books with other book lovers. Chances are many book lovers would love to start a club but simply don't know how, or for some reason think it is difficult. Starting your own book club can be easy, inexpensive, fun, and rewarding. The main requirement? A passion for words!

Agency Creates Publishing Division

Endeavor has hired veteran ICM lit agent Richard Abate to create an East Coast book division. This puts Endeavor in league with ICM and WMA, Hollywood agencies that have full-service publishing businesses. Abate has worked with successful operations that has made deals for bestselling books--and then connects with an agent who turns many into film and TV deals. (Submitted by author Shelly Reuben)

REVIEWER: Brenda Snodgrass

While surfing the Web, I came across Armchair Interview's review of Steven Rigolosi's CIRCLE OF ASSASSINS. I just wanted to thank you and Brenda Snodgrass for taking the time to review one of our titles. I was really delighted to see Brenda's comment that Rigolosi has "masterminded a new type of mystery," since that's what we think about the book, too!

Max St. John, Ransom Note Press

REVIEWER: Julie Failla Earhart

Just a quick note to thank you, and your reviewer Julie Failla Earhart, for bringing my novel, ALL THE NUMBERS, to your audience. I'm so pleased to be featured on your website. As a debut novelist, reaching out to readers is so important to me, and your site helps me to do just that. Thanks for providing me with yet another way to meet readers.

Judy Larsen, author ALL THE NUMBERS

REVIEWER: Kathy Johnson

Thank you and Kathy Johnson for the wonderful review of THE DOCTOR'S DAUGHTER. I really appreciate it and will post to my website. Again, thanks for everything, and please pass my gratitude on to Ms. Johnson.

Happy Trails, Donna MacQuigg, author of THE DOCTOR'S DAUGHTER (May release) and several other historical romances

REVIEWER: Laura Hilton

Many thanks to you for posting a review for my book! You are very much appreciated--please tell Laura Hilton a hearty "thank you" as well!

Jenn Doucette, author of MAMA SAID THERE'D BE DAYS LIKE THISv

REVIEWER: Jake Chism

I wanted to thank you for your heartfelt review of my debut novel, PROTECTOR. It's always nice when a reviewer really understands what a writer is putting forth in a book and you certainly understood that very well. The relationship story in PROTECTOR truly is the focal point of the book, playing secondary to the "who done it" element. Thank you for taking the time to read PROTECTOR and to appreciate the message within the book.

Laurel Dewey, author of PROTECTOR

REVIEWER: Elysabeth Eldering

Just a word of sincere thanks for the review of THE LITERARY SIX at Armchair Interviews. As someone who has long enjoyed the site as a voracious reader, to have my own novel featured in a review was most thrilling.

Please extend my heartfelt thank to reviewer Elysabeth Eldering for her thoughtful review. I admire well-written reviews that get to the heart of the matter in a crisp and succinct manner. I appreciate her kind words about the book--and apologize that her electricity bill was higher due to her need "to keep the lights" on after reading THE LITERARY SIX.

Thank you again for creating and maintaining such an enjoyable watering hole for bibliophiles and opening your home to writers.

Vince A. Liaguno, author of THE LITERARY SIX

REVIEWER: Michele Davis

I've just read Michele Davis's review of my book, THE BARD OF BETHLEHEM. Many thanks to her for a prompt, thoughtful, and fair critique. I appreciate it.

David James Trapp, author, THE BARD OF BETHLEHEM

REVIEWER: Brenda Snodgrass

Thank you for the great review of THE END. It was a pleasant surprise. Brenda hit all the right notes. Frankly, I could not have written it as well as she did. I would gladly do an interview.

Our Reviewer Friends Out There...

-- JILL STOVAL just received her letter of admission to the MFA program in Vermont. She is so excited and thanks Armchair Interviews for our reference letter and encouragement. Her first residency will be in July and this sounds delightful. What an adventure!

-- JAMIE DRIGGERS had a son March 9, who joins his three siblings on the picture book reviewing front. Mother and baby are well and look forward to many hours of reading (and reviewing) together. In less than a month, we have a review from her (with the kids' input, of course). What a gal.

-- ELYSABETH ELDERING sold her second short story to Echelon. Congrats!

-- LAURETTA ALI (when she isn't reviewing for us) is an actress in Atlanta. She just finished the play, "A Day in the Life" where she played the role of Mother Bouvier. She was a woman playing a man playing a woman. In other words--a drag queen. It was challenging, but obviously she did a great job as many people approached the playwright and couldn't believe she was really a woman.

Develop interest in life as you see it;
in people, things, literature, music--
the world is so rich, simply throbbing with rich treasures,
beautiful souls and interesting people.
